why does this happen?

Sear isn't engaging in hole deep enough to hold it closed. Could be the sear is worn or damaged. Scales or liners could be twisted from warpage or temperature changes.

A button return spring problem may be added to the possible causes I "think". Basically just like Whippersnapper said, that the spring isn't lifting the button up high enough for the sear pin to sit in the hole properly.
