German springer

Post by hearandgone »

I’ve just received this German SPRINGER. I’ve never seen one like this and have not been able to find any information about it. I think it’s from the 1950s but I don’t really know and I’d like to know who produced it if possible. Any info would be appreciated.

I don't know who made them, or if Solingen Cutlery company was a manufacturer or a retailer or an importer.
But I can tell you about the knife.
These are unusual in that there is no spring pressure on the blade when the knife is closed. Pulling the button back pulls the short, arched spring down-against the curved blade tang. This provides the spring pressure. Further pulling the button back releases the sear, allowing the knife to spring open.

Very unusual but cool. Love the jigged bone scales.

There is a patent pics in one of the books that shows how it works. It's like a DA otf in that pushing the button down is what pulls the spring back. Then after you pass a certain point the spring is allowed to fire. I saw some pieces one time and if I recall correctly, the button is just screwed into the bar inside. Don't lose that button!

There were a ton of innovative knife designs all from around the exact same early 20th Century time. I think there was a big inventing trend back then, like everyone hoping to be the next Edison.

What makes you say it was made by Herder?

Reasonably sure it wasn't made by dhgate or it would have your name on it.
