That movie has always bothered me. In real life if the judge learned of Fonda's escapade with the knife he bought during deliberations, he would have declared a mistrial and thrown Fonda into jail for contempt of court. It's not nice to introduce "evidence" outside of the trial.

A similar thing actually happened to a friend of mine. He sued a woman who ran a stop sign and totaled his valuable collector car. One of the jurors went to the scene of the incident many months after it happened, and told the other jurors that the stop sign was partially hidden by tree leaves. It may have been then but not when the incident occurred. The lady got off.

I think Mr. Fonda said he picked it up in ChinaTown 😂

It was an 11" picklock. (EIG, Mauro Mauro, Frank Beltrame, Armando Beltrame, et. al.) dark horn with an embossed cellophane-applique dragon taped onto the scales. It wasn't special for the period, more commonplace than it would be today.

Any "propmaster" could have this made within 20 minutes.

When Lee J Cobb's character tossed the "switch knife" onto the table with a clatter,
I yelled "HEY !!!" at the TV before I could catch myself. It's just no way to treat a knife!
--and I would not walked out of the jury room and left my $6 switchblade there, either!

Not to start a rhubarb here, but I am not entirely sure that the 2nd knife could be considered "evidence". If a juror had gestured at his shoes to make a point, or taken a pen out of his pocket and used it as a prop to explain something, would those items be "evidence"? It seems like a gray area.

I turned on RWAC just at the end of the planetarium show, and turned it off after the "chickee run" challenge. The fight on the Observatory deck is the only part of the movie I really want to see. ....though I was tempted to turn it back on at the end to see Plato get whacked. Remember, at the beginning of the movie he was caught slaughtering puppies with a .45, which certainly warrants a death sentence in my book.

Slaughtering puppies, he should have been skinned alive and tied to an ant hill on a hot sunny day.

Buttom Man the introduction of the second knife by a juror was clearly a cause for a miss trial. The jury is never allowed to to consider anything outside of what was presented in the court room.
