Plain Jane among beauty queens

Post by jim d, »

There have been many photos of gorgeous picklocks and other rare vintage knives posted here in the last few days so I thought I would go the other way and post a typical, run of the mill example. Plain black horn with no figuring, back scale is the same. One of the most, if not the most common stamp: Mauro Mario, ordinary 8 in. length combine to put this in the nothing special category.

What this knife does have going for it is that I was told by an authority that it has never been apart, lockup is tight, sits deep and centered when closed, no liner gaps, and overall is defect free. Plus, it was my first vintage picklock so I guess it is something special, at least to me.

I personally love that tang stamp. That one is in great shape. A good candidate to carry when you are out in your limo wearing your tuxedo!

Ur plain Jane is a real standout. I would venture to say that most ppl reading this forum and others can only wish they had a plain Jane. I’d love to have a black horn, crisp opening centered bladed Mauro Mario. Most excellent presentation jim d.

Ah ha...but they are both Mauro Marios. I agree that the horn is prettier on one than the other but I don't know how many knives that I own have never been messed with. Probably not many. Congrats to both. Both are pretty unique.

Wow, I like them both and as far as the "Plain Jane," it's still a classic 1950s picklock that is in great shape.

Beautiful knives both Jim and Thom! It's not the first time I've heard Mauro Mario referred to as an "easy to find" or "common" stamp. I know I haven't been around that long, but I'm not exactly tripping over them. I've seen many more of the Mauro Mario produced with importers stamps available.

Nice ! Sometimes plain Jane is a good thing, like Sal said every collection should have a few traditional black.

Hi Jim,
Plain Jane is not very plain. It’s what everyone pictures when they hear the word stiletto.
Thom, your knife is wicked awesome great looking horn!
