Spring question... Ol wandy...

Post by kugr »

I picked up an old wandy, have it dismantled for cleaning experience. Learned alot taking this one apart, like how to remove sunk in scale pins, the how to fix your screw ups with the horn scales......

Sorry, so my question. What is left of it, I cleaned so I could get my mic on it. It measures: .095 x .130. Should I replace it with the exact same size? Or is it acceptable to deviate from the original size? I ask this because in the " spring notch" it seems to be staked ( the side edge has been hit with a punch to hold it in place). I eagerly await the stiletto masters responses.

You can deviate if it works, and looks original.

If you have to, you can file that punched metal down, that push your new spring in, then punch it again or hammer in a pin.

Did you get the tempering figured out? Before going to the trouble of making the perfect spring, you want to be sure you have that done.

I haven't started on it yet, will be away from my projects for a few days... should be able to get back to everything by the end of the weekend. Heat treating seems simple enough, I've worked with steel for over 12 years.

Ok, soooo, back to this one.... In my make shift diagram, would the spring including bend roughly match up between the sear hole and the back of the blade? Also does this spring kind of flatten out at the end? I've been noticing some of the older ones do that. Thoughts?
