BURN Knives Instagram Auction

Post by TDPurcell »

Hello all.

I am a new forum member here looking to learn what i can from all of the great amount of information posted on this form to further my ability to make custom autos from scratch. I have a lot to learn.

Anyway, I just saw this BURN knives instagram auction of production knife parts and thought I would post it here as it may be of some interest to some of the forum members who customize production knives and not on instagram or following Paul Panak on instagram.

I'm only working on my second attempt at an automatic, and I am posting my progress on instagram.

If the knife turns out (or even if it doesn't), I'll post pics of the final result here, along with future knives and projects if switchblades turns into something I want to pursue. That remains uncertain at this point, but I am very interested in the possibilities. I just discovered this forum last week and am working my through a lot of information that has been shared here over the years.

It's funny you say that because I used the wiggler once and have not used it since. LOL

It's a center finding device used for finding the center of a drill press chuck and lining this center with the exact center of intended location of holes to be drilled, if that makes sense.

Unless I'm missing something, there is nothing powering your backspring (lockback.)

The lock back has an integral spring that pushes against the kickspring.

The first pic attached here shows my first attempt at this mechanism. It is based off the design used by Chris Crawford in making his lever action autos and shown in the linked YouTube video.

You can see from the video that I’m using Chris’s concept, including the integral lock bar spring.

It’s made of CPM154, hardened at 1950 degrees, air quencheched, and tempered at 1100 degrees for 2 hours, twice, resulting in about 47 to 49 HRC, which, my understanding, is spring hardness for CPM154. So I’m hoping it will function effectively as a leaf spring if I have the spring temper recipe dialed for this steel. I’ll know more after the knife is finished and I’ve fired it thousands of times (if I can get the knife built correctly).
