is this considered a flatguard?

Post by portlandmike »

I was reading an older post today on BO/BC knives so I decided to dig mine out and realized the bolsters looked sorta flat... It is a BO/BC with a kinda wasp shaped body, 9" only mark is INOX ... would this be considered a "flatguard" ?

I believe so. There was a recent post about these this week so you might try a search for flatguards and find it.

those all seemed to be older, nicer knives and I don't believe any were BO/BC... this knife is very light and has a cheap feel to it

Not sure about this one Mike, but I feel your new Frosolone would be more of a Flatguard Picklock, but I don't even think the Frosolone's are considered as Flatguards. Naturally, I could be wrong.

"Flat guards" had two-piece guards-the "guard section being a thin piece of metal.
This one is not a true flat guard.

It's similar or the same as a derby bolster.

While those Derby bolsters* do have flatter than normal guards, the term "flat guard" is more a reference to the two-piece bolster than it is to the actual flatness of the guards.

*I know, many people only consider the shorter down-turned bolster to be actual Derbies.

FWIW, I recently grabbed one of those with an unswedged blade so I've been doing a little research on 'em. The bolster style is often referred to as a Pagoda rather than a Derby, which is much shorter. They were most likely made in the early '60s by Marino Farfalli and Figli in Maniago. "Farfalli" is "butterfly" in Italian and some of these knives have a butterfly stamp with "M F & F M" inside.

Bill, were those hammered into shape over a form or filed into shape?

I believe they were stamped in a punch press.
