My RUST-RIDDLED Problem Knife!!!!

Post by barshoo »

For your viewing DIS-pleasure is my RUSTY Rainy Vallotton Custom Knife in all it's pathetic glory. I discovered it a few weeks ago when I opened it's case to oil it. If you want to see what's left of the rust, check out the back bolsters. There was a LOT on the top bolster and a little on the bottom bolster.

My idea (after wiping off as much as I possibly did) is to use 1200 grit sandpaper to gently sand off the rest, then send it away to be re-polished. But, I didn't want to do that until I asked you guys what you think, and advise.

It needs some work! If it was mine I'd see if whoever you have do the polish would do the rust removal too.

Ditto
I wouldn’t have a problem cleaning stainless or nickel silver, but I’d let a pro clean and polish your outrageously beautiful knife.
Rainy should take care of it for you on his tab.
OMG!; your knife is drop dead breathtaking.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how good it looked. How long was it in storage?

Hi guys! I just finished emailing Rainy Vallotton with the pictures, and I expect to hear back in a few days. Here's what happened:

I've owned this knife for nine years. I bought it from Nick and Joyce at Horizon. For years I stored it in its box (pictured here) in my bedroom next to, and outside of my closet...not near the window. Last winter was a fairly dry one. I just don't understand what happened! I put it away again, not wanting to deal with it.

I can't afford to pay to have it fixed, but I don't really have a choice. It cost close to $2,200. I haven't done anything other than rub off what I could with an old terry cloth. I appreciate you all for your concern, and for the suggestions you have made! I will keep y'all posted as to what happens from here on!

Very glad to hear Rainy is going to take care of the problem. Can't think of anyone better to do it than the original cutler. Please post photos when you get it back.

Stunning knife Barshoo
Love those Mammoth tooth scales.
Unfortinately Damascus rusts pretty quickly when handled or touched even lightly .I have similar problems with my ww2 Samurai swords....constantly cleaning and coating with choji oil.
Glad you got through to Mr Vallatton and it will be put like new for you.

Its been great seeing your knives here lately.....thanks for sharing them.
