Switchblade repair
HI all forum members, bought a switchblade today which was poorly designed, is it possible to improve it? Cut some metal or replace the blade? Photos attached.. Seller didn't know who is the maker of the knife.

Re: Switchblade repair
Talk dirty to it, the blade may straighten up a little. Is the blade locked in the last picture?

Re: Switchblade repair
The very definition of a knife with a serious case of banana blade! I'll bet that blade which appears to have been sharpened and cleaned up on a coarse grinding wheel is not original to the knife. You can carefully remove metal from the top of the lock tab or from the blade cut out where the lock pin is,or both so that the lock tab lies flat in the cut out. However, there may be a problem with the lock pin now being out of alignment with the hole in the lock tab. Good luck!

Re: Switchblade repair
Thanks for advice, I also thought the blade is not original. I decided to show it to the local knifemaker I know. The problem is, not everybody wants to deal with switchbladesnatcherly wrote:The very definition of a knife with a serious case of banana blade! Be careful don’t take too much off; you can’t put it back on. You can do this give it a try.

That knife will never sit straight without major modification-if at all.

Hi Bill,
If the locking pin on the knife matches up with the locking tab, other than filing the blade or lock tab what other modifications could the knife need?

Re: Switchblade repair
If you move the blade back, you move the pin back.
If it locks up now, it won't lock if you start removing metal.

Re: Switchblade repair
Hi Bill,
I would have learned that lesson the hard way. Since the blade locks up now. It makes perfect sense filing the blade or the lock tab would change the position of the blade’s pin. I wouldn’t have thought the alignment could change.
If the blade or lock tab was filed and the locking pin did not engage would taking a tiny amount of metal from the blade’s locking pin work? Or would that create a bigger problem?

Re: Switchblade repair
John- in theory, yes.
In reality-that blade can never work properly.

Re: Switchblade repair
I wonder if a knife maker put a blade from one of his knives on the handle from a different knife. The only time I have ever seen extreme banana blade like that is when I tried to see if one blade would fit a different handle.
