AKC Mini - Mine's Sticking - What's Your Experience With Them

Post by Witterings »

Bought one of the AKC Mini lever locks quite a while back and it's always suffered form not opening fully and can't be "relied on".

Have other people experienced this and have you found a cure, I've just tried blowing it all out with compressed air and using a different oil (3 in 1) and it's helped a bit but it only just opens and I feel like it's only time (probably days) before it starts sticking again as I have managed to free it up before.

If anyone knows anything else I could do to resolve it I'd be interested in any suggestions ......

I'm Also interested to hear from people that have got one of these and if I've just been unlucky, if it wasn't for that it'd be one of my favorite knives as it so easily fits in your pocket without much weight and has a large enough blade for most everyday jobs.

If I thought I'd just got the Friday jobbie and was unlucky with this one I'd be awful tempted to buy another.

Hello Witterings,
Sounds like the pivot pin is a little too tight. Slip one or two razor blades between the blade and liner. Be careful you don’t want a loose blade. If you use too many razor blades you’ll have to peen the pivot pin.
I have a few and all are fine except for one, the blade peeks.
I like using Quick Release oil. It won’t gum up your knife like some oils do.
Good luck,
John

Another thing and I know it sounds stupid but make sure you are pushing the lever down firmly. Leverlocks like a firm squeeze to open fully.

I'll have a look at the pivot pin although I just checked and there is a small amount of play in the blade already which does that suggest it may not be the issue??

It's already not opening again so my couple of days was a bit optimistic ... I have learnt to give them a solid push to open .... in fact probably from this knife as all of the others seem OK :-)

Since the blade has a little bit of play already I can guessed thst it’s not because it was peened too tightly.
Try pressing the lever quickly and firmly when opening the knife. I’ve noticed that if I don’t press down hard and quick sometimes the blade doesn’t open all the way.

Lever locks prefer grease. Remove as much oil as you can.
Put a dab of lithium automotive grease on the blade tang-where it contacts the backspring.
Then, look at the spring. Most springs rub one side of the liners. Put a tiny drop of oil on the side that rubs.

No worries I'll give this a try ... would you use something like Brake / clutch cleaner to get rid of any muck that's in there at the moment .... saw this posted somewhere as a suggestion but was hesitant rather than rushing in to try it.

Have done it and it's eased up again be interesting to see how long it lasts :-)

Does anyone use Dry PTFE lube .... again I found a video suggesting it and the fact they don't attract so much muck / dust the logic seems to make sense, interested to see if others use it and if it's any good or best steer clear of.
