Re: Super Automatic otf repair
As far as I know they started using the dual action design in the mid to late 60’s and I am pretty sure the design came from the trapdoor automatics. They just took it one stage further and that’s when you started seeing the pinned bolster models with out the trapdoor that kinda looked like super-automatics but a bit larger. I know some of the older models actually had two separate springs. One for out and one for back in.

Hi Mks82,
It’s not the blade jumping off the track. I’ll dig them up a shoot a photo or two.
Maybe with your help I can get one or both working.

The Super Automatic came with no button. I used a screw driver as a lever. The mechanism moved sack and forth, but no blade movement. I opened it and your seeing what looks like under the hood. I guess u should pop the machinist out. Do yo have a suggestions? I was thinking a using a small flat head screwdriver.

Can you manually push the blade into the out position and click it into place. with one of your fingers push the blade all the way out until it’s in the out position ? If the mechanism is still working it should still fire. If the blade is not free it could possibly be jammed.john wrote:Hi Mks82,

wow that is one of the rarer super automatic knife models I’ve only seen a couple of em in pictures and I’ve never worked on one of these before and I’m not 100% on the mechanism in this model. They all kinda have the same idea behind the mechanism but this having the button on the side I’m not as familiar with these types of OTF’s but still I think I could be somewhat helpful. You shouldn’t have to stick a screwdriver in it to move anything. Should be able to pull it out with your fingers.john wrote:The Super Automatic came with no button. I used a screw driver as a lever. When you push up or down, you can feel a lot of spring like pressure. That is your finger cocking the blade. Basically pushing the button down (or up) is like pulling a slingshot back. Then when it gets to the point where it passes the locking side bar, it flings the knife (like letting go of the slingshot to fire it).mykniveSSuck82 wrote:It’s strange I know these knives inside and out but still don’t fully understand how stretching a spring over a metal piece like that makes a knife dual action... I’m lost for words.
Re: Super Automatic otf repair
Hello MKS82 and Jeremy,
I decided against praying out of mechanism. I remove the blade and I was glad I did not try to pry it out. The mechanism is screwed into the frame of the knife. The carriage is made from die cast metal. It’s very brittle.
I’m guessing that the previous owner tried to repair the button but couldn’t. When the knife was reassembled the spring was put in the wrong place. The spring should have been placed on the other side of the two pins on the blade. Now, the knife functions properly; the blade shoots out and it would shoot back in if I had a button on the side to slide back. My next project is to attaching sliding button to the knife.
The knife opens and closes on the principle of inertia. When the button is slid forward the track slams into the base of the blade pushing it forward into the locked position. The opposite takes place when closing; the mechanism slams into the pins pushing the knife back into the handle and locking it closed.

Re: Super Automatic otf repair
Here’s my other broken OTF the Black Finger.
This one arrived in the open position; the blade is stuck in the open position and button is missing. This one looks an awful lot like the one that has been disassembled. When I have some time today/tomorrow I will try to take the guts out of this OTF and see what is going on with it. One thing I did notice there’s a slight bend in the track that the spring sits and I’m wondering if that’s the problem? Any ideas why the blade is stuck open?

Re: Super Automatic otf repair
I got the knife working. The blade would shoot in and out but not without some wiggling and jiggling. Obviously something is it right somewhere. While wiggling and jiggling the top spring came undone. Know that knives ife only works in one direction that’s why I need to open the knife up. I cannot get the carriage out of the knife.
Does anyone know how these pop open?
