Lingard spring blade knife. Any info?

Post by Jerr184 »

I have a lingard switchblade. It reads "registered by government Feb 9 1850" on the long blade. The short blade works the action of the knife. It still works too. The blades don't seem to close all the way and the main blade opens a little to far. I think the handle is bone but I'm not sure. That's about all the info I know. I've looked on the internet with very little results. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome jerr184

There was a J.lingurd making knives in peacroft Sheffield from 1849-1865 ....he could be your maker.Made Bowie knives aswell possibly for export to the USA.

I absolutely love those scales and bolsters ,the work in them is phenomenal. 8)

It's a beautiful old switchblade that I will let the more knowleadgeble comment on ,but thanks for sharing it as I havn't seen one before.

Great knife to start here with.

Age is probably pre-1865.
handles are stag, not bone.
You have a very valuable knife. Don't play with it-just oil the steel parts.
Should you wish to sell it, I can help you with that. You can contact me at mickeybeep@aol.com

Wow, that is a great example of a very early switchblade. Don't think there are many of those around.

Strange that the originators of this style of knife did not follow up and become major factors in this trade. Instead they ceded their early leadership to various makers on the continent, predominantly the Italians. Maybe Queen Victoria did not approve?

The guy who had it did come back after the posts about how valuable it was so he should know. I would guess someone made him an offer that he took. So someone here probably has it. I had some questions about how it worked and was hoping to see more pics of it.
