There isn't much information on Boker's springers.

Yes, it's an excellent knife, with a desireable tang stamp.
Probably made by Robert Klass for Boker.

You could get a idea of when it was made if you (me or anyone) can find out when German law decided that a knife with a nail nick was not a switchblade. Or that is the rumor I heard when I asked the "nail nick" question many years ago to a bunch of old-time switch collectors. I have a few examples of only German made switches and lever locks that have nail nick that appear, from the construction methods, to be from the same time period. My guess is that they are all from the 80's or it could be the late 70's.

Anyone have a good friend in Germany that is a knife collector? They might know the answer.

To my knowledge, there was no such German law.
Springers with nail nicks have been made for 100 years or so.

Then explain the switches that only show up for a short period from Germany makers. And I would like to see an example of an old pre-WWII with a factory nail nick if you have a photo. Never seen one myself but I am always looking for new knowledge.

The nick is to facilitate opening if the spring breaks. I'm sure knives could be ordered either way.
A law that says a knife is not a switchblade because of a nail nick would make no sense at all.
Here is a quick picture. About 2/3 of these are vintage.
If you really want to be stubborn, I could probably come up with more.

How about a catalog page from the AKAH 1908 catalog? That's pre-WW1!

Great drawer Bill. Is the pearl on the end a Hubertus?

Good for you, Mickey. Now we all know something new.

This time you could back it up with facts. Not true for all your posts if you want to be arrogant. I am looking for knowledge, not insults.

And you still have not addressed the German only switches with a nail nick. The law did not make sense so that is why they changed it. Remember the switches with 9 inch handles and 8 inch blades? What law made them do that?

Sunny,
I don't mean to be arrogant. I can probably back any of my statements with facts if I dug around enough. I have been doing this a long time and have seen things that most people haven't. Many people take what I say at face value. Some want to argue for some reason.
Please understand, I VERY seldom post anything as fact unless I know it to be so.
Now please back up your statement about German law with facts. I know quite a few old time" collectors and people/knifemakers in Germany and this is the first I heard about it.

Eddymunster,
That knife is a fake Hen & Rooster that was made from Hubertus parts.

Don't see many with that H.W. Boker stamp, that's a tricky one, looks 1950's or older to me but I'm no expert. I've never heard of that german "nail nick" law--I tend to trust Bill D's knowledge on these things, he's corrected me a couple of times and was always right.

A little background information on this knife... My father served in the U.S. Army in WW II and the Korean War. He got it while overseas. That would place him acquiring it in the 1940's or 1950's. I did find a sight which claimed Boker only used that knife handle in the 1930's. Any info is greatly appreciated.
