Vallotton SpyderCo Lil' Sub Hilt Dual Action

Post by Sunny »

Butch Vallotton is considered one of the finest automatic knife makers specializing in double action autos and for converting manual folders into automatic. He started making knives full time in 1984, making his first auto in 1987. His assisted knife technology is in current use by Gerber, and he has worked with Spyderco and Microtech. He talked about making a dual action auto out of the Lil' Sub Hilt folder at the Oregon Show last spring.

He designed the Sub Hilt and Lil' Sub Hilt folding knives for Spyderco. Butch takes the standard models and converts them into dual action automatic knives. There are lots of YouTube videos reviewing the standard two knives if you are not familiar with them.

The first picture has the Butch Vallotton designed Spyderco Sub Hilt and Lil' Sub Hilt dual action knives. By pushing upward on the front piece of G10 handle material the blade will open automatically on either knife. The rest are of The Lil' Sub Hilt, prototype #01. It is 7 3/8 inches open and 4 1/8 inches closed. The bigger Sub Hilt, 8 5/8 inches open, 5 inches closed, is serial number 16 from the continuing production of that knife that started years ago.

Compared to the Sub Hilt model, the fit and finish is not up to Butch's high standards on the Prototype; though it is very good by normal knife maker's standards. I know that will become excellent once they go into production. The word to me last spring was that they planned to only make 100 of the Lil' Sub Hilt auto.

And that is Butch's hand writing on the box.
