ATS-34 vs 440c Flat grind

Post by Vlad »

Hi guys,
I just purchased two 9 " flat grind Stiletto switchblades from a pawnshop. One is an Armando Beltrame 9 inch Flat ground stiletto with a swivel bolster and ATS-34 blade. The other is a Dui Buoi forged Flat grind Stiletto 9" switchblade which has a button opening and closing system and a 440c blade.
I was wondering if you could tell me which one holds an edge better and which one takes a finer edge .
Is it 440c or ATS-34 ?
Thanking you so much ,
Vlad

The ATS-34 blade IMO. These are the best AB stilettos for general use. Too bad they only came in the 23 cm size

Agreed. I wish that I had a picklock model, flat-grind with a blade in ATS-34. That would make a great carry knife.

But which one will take the finer edge ? 440c or ATS-34 ?

Finally , a valid answer. Thank you , sir ! And between the Damascus AB stiletto and the ATS-34 one which one do you think would hold a better edge and have better edge retention ?

ATS-34. This is the best that they could come up with for the Flat Grind AB Stiletto. It can be tempered to a Rockwell hardness of 62 and hold a razor's edge far longer than 440C

I think it's ATS 34, it can hold the edge longer!

AB made them both ways. The swivel bolster was available for some years then AB leapt on the picklock band wagon after Frank B proved that demand existed for this type of knife, and AB issued their own versions. They were little more than swivels with a different top front bolster. Naturally, all the blade options were available.

On a side note , I heard that ATS-34 is pretty brittle and prone to chipping. Is this true ?

Hello!

Great you have one of those ATS-34 ABs. They're not manufactured anymore and they're really great knives!
