S30 vs. S90 Blade Steel.

Post by 666 »

Hi all....I am new to this forum. I have a question that I can't find an answer to. Microtech's LCC D/A comes in 2 different steels, S30-V and S90-V. I have searched the internet for info on the various steels used in knife blades. I have found everything but S30 and S90. Can anyone help?

Try a search for A.I.S.I. [American Iron and Steel Institute] if they don't
list it, it is probably a private brand name for something else.
I've never heard of either one, but I don't claim to know everything.
Also try searches for Japanese/European Steels. The harder it is to get any info the more likely it's something common renamed.

Thanks for the info...I tried about 10 web-sites under AISI...no luck. The next thing to do is email Microtech.

Hi...Your LCC must be a proto. I have yet to see one with 154-CM. My blade has 7 2002 as a date, and is an S30-V. On some of the pictures of the LCC's on Bladeauction, the dates go back to 2000, and they are listed as S90-V. Thanks for the reply Pushbutton. The mystery goes on.

Even the new ones at PVK, are marked s30v/390v . If my memory serves me right, Pushbutton is correct, they were marked 154-cm..
Maybe a new batch for 2002 are s30v/s90v..

Hey 666, both you and Pushbutton are correct...The M/A is marked 154-cm, while the D/A model is marked s30v/s90v...Could be just a different production run....Check out PVK......

Mine is D/A and isn't a proto although it's a few years old because it is also all TI no alluminium. When these came out 154-CM was the hot steel at the time and even I find it hard to keep up with all the newer stuff in steel which I have a feeling is basicly the same with less of this and more of that and a fancy new name to go along with a fancy new price. On any of the forums I mentioned Joe Talmadge (spelling?) can answer your questions about any steel.

Ahhhhh...The mystery takes a turn. I want to thank you all for your comments. I can see this site becoming a bit of an addiction, like my other countless collections. ...Razor, great site, Thanks. Well people, I am fairly new to knife collecting...I will be posting more questions, some stupid, I'm sure. Take care all...and thanks again.

S30 and S90 Blades

Post by 666 »

Hi...A quick note. I found some info on the S30 and S90-V steel used on the Microtech LCC. It's a product of Sandvik Steel....also, the S90 is a harder steel than the S30.
