Grandpa Campolin

Post by natcherly »

Bob posted on his SharperDeal forum that Angelo notified him today of the passing of Grandpa Campolin. He was one of the greats with many links to the past as well as continuing making knives in the traditional way until his retirement. A sad day indeed. The Old Guard is fading away

Sad news indeed, I met his son and grandson but not the man himself. I'm pleased to own some knives made by this master.

Angelo Campolin, Sr. was the grandfather of the Italian stiletto. During the 1950s he was the shop foreman for the Mauro Mario company.
Mauro made the great majority of the Italian stilettos during that time-perhaps even more than the Latama consortium. He worked until very recently at Falcon Knives/AKC, and was the founder of Falcon. He loved his job. Angelo, Sr. was one of the prime sources of information for the book "Switchblades of Italy." He was a fine, honorable man. Though we only met once, I considered him a friend and fellow cutler.

I am only a newbie but I also wish to extend my condolences to this great man's family. The knives out of Italy are timeless classics and Angelo Sr's contributions will live on for many generations to come. I'm sure his legacy will be carried on by current and future generations of Campolins'.

If heaven has knife makers then they have inherited a great talent!

Sincerely,
AM
