Whether you can tell it or not, the red rust is slowly eating deeper into the steel-and it will continue to do so as long as it is there. The application of oil can slow this progression.

Your knife was made in the mid to late 1950s. It could have been purchased overseas. Handles are horn. The size is one of the rarer Coricama sizes in the US. It appears that your button spring is broken. That's why it opens when you take the safety off.

I didn't say the patent number means it's a Latama.
I have seen knives that were not Latamas so marked.

The patent number is for a Latama kris blade. I believe the makers used it to keep others from making similar knives-even if it only covered the blade style. Camillus made Remington-marked knives for quite a while. Then, Bear MCG bought the rights to the Remington name.
Bear no longer owns the rights, so they are probably made in China now.
