Re: What's This For ... Came With Whetstone

That's a nagura stone, which is mainly used for cleaning/removing embedded metal swarf from the surface of your whetstone.
I suppose it could also be used for a bit of flattening as well, but a coarse diamond plate works a lot better and faster for that.

Flockton, Tompkin & Co 2-blade small slipjoint

Flockton, Tompkin & Co 2-blade small knife with MOP scales. Made in Sheffield and complete with original leather pocket pouch. The knife was bought new around 1920 in Amsterdam, and it's still in very good condition. https://i.postimg.cc/xqj43J1R/GEDC3565.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/dZ0NsXxX/GEDC3566.j...

Re: Vintage Kronenkrebs Fahrtenmesser / Scout knife

The knife has already proven to be a very effective short chopper during 2019 and 2020, with it's heavy convex blade in low alloy carbon steel combined with a stick tang covered in shock dampening rubber. Still working on thinning the convex blade shape a hair more every now and then, slowly approac...

A Western Bowie was also used by Robert Redford in the classic movie Jeremiah Johnson from 1972:

Re: Early Western Bowie

A little belated follow-up story: Upon closer inspection it turned out that this second Bowie had a number scratched in the brass guard, very small and only readable through a magnifying glass. That number was a social security number or SSN, which i managed to trace back to the man who put it there...

Re: How often do you oil?

For the best and longest lasting opening & closing action of (semi-) automatic knives as well as all standard folding knives i use either Nano-Oil 5 weight or 10 weight (depends on the tolerances), sparingly and not very often (think months or even years) For the action of my Moser 1400 electric hai...

Re: J.A.Henckels single blade lockback folder

Apparently this knife once belonged to a German WW1 soldier, but it's of course like Bernard Levine always says: "buy the knife, not the story". This is how it currently looks btw. The pins holding the knife together were worn to a point that the opened knife resembled a baby's rattler, so i'm in th...

Re: Sharpening on wet & dry SiC paper

Personally i like the contrast of that thick blade with the narrow edge angle.
It will of course never be the greatest slicer, but it will definitely make a sturdy & dependable hunting / survival knife.

Re: Sharpening on wet & dry SiC paper

Just finished hand regrinding this older ScrapYard Wardog in INFI steel using wet & dry SiC paper, first on on glass then on rubber with WD40 oil as a lubricant. The old convex edge measured ~40 degrees inclusive at the heel widening to ~50 degrees inclusive at the belly, while the new convex edge m...

Re: Thai Kiwi knife & Zanussi cutting board

The two main reasons why i'm using this polyethylene cutting board is that 1) the material has proven to be much more edge friendly than my beechwood cutting board, and 2) especially for cutting lots of chicken & fish this material is also much safer than wood, and easier to clean thoroughly. Even t...
