Re: Scale Care

I agree that lightly moisturizing a dry and potentially brittle piece of hardwood with an occasional drop of the appropriate oil can be equated with softening its surface slightly, but IMO, that's not a bad thing. Oil and wax are usually used together to restore fine hardwood instruments and furnitu...

Re: Scale Care

"Oils do more harm than good." I have to respectfully disagree when it comes to wood. As a fellow bassist, you've never rubbed a few drops of light wood oil into your fingerboards? Classical and modern stringed instrument builders universally recommend that bare wood fingerboards should occasionally...

Re: Scale Care

Hi Bill (and all)...Just wondering what are the best methods of long term scale care for 1: Abalone/Pearl 2: Various types of Horn 3: Various types of Woods? Abalone/Pearl doesn't need any care, AFAIK. A drop of mineral oil rubbed into horn has always worked for me. There're lotsa care products for...

Re: Update collection pics.

"Also make nice display attributes." They certainly do. I'm the same way - I keep everything associated with a knife. I collect antique slipjoints and there's nothing like finding an old catalog or a well cared for knife with its original box, wrapping paper, or leather "purse," etc. I think your di...

Re: If anyone is interested?

Yep they're real beasts. It's not so much the length (which is 11", so roughly the same as a 28cm Walt's Classic) but the mass . Most D/A OTFs use relatively thin blade stock to keep the overall mass and thickness of the chassis manageable. Not Paul's. The blade thickness on his Italian OTF is 0.17"...

Re: Update collection pics.

IMHO, there's nothing humble about that collection. Nice setup, too - clean, airy, well-lit, and lotsa room to expand.

Re: AGA Campolin Zero Dagger Leverlock

Jay, those are sweet looking Zeros. Don't think I've ever seen the bayonet blade with a polished finish. It looks great with the filework. Nice to see someone else who appreciates brightly colored knives. I've always gravitated toward bold colors over the black and grey that seem so ubiquitous these...

Re: AGA Campolin Zero Dagger Leverlock

Thanks, Chris. They sign their work inside one of the liners, but it's hard to make out the name. I always keep an eye on their "what's new" list. They come up with some real gems. I bought one of those AGA 10" from them a while back.

Best,
Rick

Thanks, Thom. PM replied. I did return the problem knife with no...problems :). PVK's customer service was excellent, as was Walt's on a different occasion.

Re: AGA Campolin Zero Dagger Leverlock

Thanks. Yeah, whoever fit the scales did a good job, especially the way they're carved out and contoured to accommodate the lever and its spring. The polished ivory is a bit slippery, so you really have to grip the handle just right when releasing the blade. It fires hard enough to fly outta yer han...

Re: Walt's 23cm Picture Thread

From what I can tell, they're not exactly flying off the shelves at PVK, which isn't too surprising given the niche market and comparatively steep price. Still, in light of the limited availability, I thought we'd see a little more collector enthusiasm. I received one that's a bit of a dud. The blad...

Re: AGA Campolin Zero Dagger Leverlock

They're solidly built, to say the least, and the fit and finish is up to modern production knife standards with none of the 'rustic' handwork that characterizes classic Italian knives. The blades are centered and straight and lock up like a vault; mine have no hint of play in any direction. The dagg...
