Hold the blade all the way closed, and push the lever down into the "locked" position. See if the peek lessens or goes away.

I have a brand new one with no peek.
I have repaired a lot of them.

The handles are chrome plated zinc. The zinc handles are almost always why they peek.

Here's some very good advice- don't try to make a new blade, at least until you have the existing blade working. Walnut is not dense enough for your purpose.You need something strong. Laminated wood -Pakkawood, etc.
