Green Diploma
Grüne abitur - The Green Diploma. No this is not about tree huggers or eco-activism. Rather, quite the opposite although I would call hunters much more eco-friendly than the left radicals. Anyway, the process of getting a hunting license in Germany is quite intensive in terms of time and difficulty ...

Re: Leuku - Big Field knife
When I was a boy scout my troop did a lot of camping in the mountains surrounding our small town in Northern Utah. One of the things we did was make knives. The blades were either made from old circular saw blades or power hacksaw blades. The hacksaw blades we used were the ones that had good knife ...

Re: Leuku - Big Field knife
This past Summer in was in Sweden fly fishing. My guide had this Sami Leuku attached to his rucksack. It did not have the usual Scandanavian style sheath but rather a flat leather one with a large belt loop. I tried by best to trade him out of it but it was a no go.

Leuku - Big Field knife
My first encounter with a Leuku was in Dombås, Norway in 1985. I was there attending a Winter Warfare course taught at the Home Guard school. All of the Norwegian instructors were carrying Leuku knives of various sizes. In contrast, , many of my colleagues were carrying Randall knives. They (we/I) r...

Re: New Bowie
I have since ordered another Covington with a slightly small handle. It has not been completed yet but I hope to have in my hands in the next week or two. Here is a photo prior to having the handle pinned. The photo is a little distorted....

Re: New Bowie
Fast forward to 2016, I made contact with Bill and he said I would be on the list again but this time he recommended a 10.5 to 11.5 inch blade. Bill passed away in 2021 before making the knife. Based on the recommendation of a well-known writer I ordered a Bagwell style Bowie from Greg Covington wit...

New Bowie
I have always thought the Bowie to be a good choice for a heavy field knife. I was especially influenced by Bill Bagwell when he was writing for Soldier of Fortune magazine in the early 1980's. At the time Bagwell was more than 2 years behind on production, I placed an order but it never happened. B...

Re: Solinger Wertarbeit Carving Set ... legit ? what brand is this ?
So..... Solinger Wertarbeit means Solingen Quality Work Ges Gesch is "gesetzlich geschützt". This literally translates to legally (by law) protected. Quite similar to patented but perhaps closer to trademarked. This marking came into use post WWII. Up until about 1945 the marking was D.R.G.M. which ...

Re: SAGAD SRT-1 (Survival Rescue Tool by Dale Rogers)
I had one of those in the 1970's or early 1980's. Really a piece of sXXX. The hokiest thing about it was the glasscutter. Just a belt or rucksack weight that was quickly discarded.

Re: Schrade Walden Paratrooper Switchblade
During WWII the Army procured the M2 Paratrooper knife. It had black handles and was issued to paratroops. It could also be found in the pockets of First Special Service Force troops, Rangers, and the OSS. The MC1 knives were ordered by the USAF in 1958 for AF personnel. They were not issued to Army...

Puukko Illness
Recently I caught the Puukko virus. I found some pictures of a bladesmith's interpretation of Finnish "Winter War" puukko on the internet and asked him to make another for me. It is the top knife and has a 23cm blade. It is big and some say too big but there are lots of examples of Puukko's from the...

Re: Traveling in Europe...
I have not seen a springer in a business here in Germany for several years now. Gravity knives can be owned but should not be kept assembled. I put blades in mine for photos and then take them apart. Really not a problem since they are not using knives. One-handed knives are now not allowed for the ...

That is another big difference between the M53 and M54. The M53 being chromed for parade use has a chromed, steel sheath.

Re: Any love for the Buck 124 "Frontiersman"?
Long story: My new brother in law and my sister went shopping for a hunting knife. He was a brand new hunter and was planning to hunt deer with my father and I. He proudly displayed his knife and we both said "Thats nice". Three weeks later I put him in a nice spot to ambush a deer coming to water. ...

Bulgarian Combat knife
I was able to pick this up through a friend in Bulgaria recently. I was surprised when he told me he had never heard of them before since he did serve in the Bulgarian military and he is a quite well known bladesmith and forges very nice blades. There are two versions of these knives, the first is t...
