Re: Wade & Butcher Boone fixed blade

The blade has been refined through grit 800 and 1000 wet & dry (again using WD40 on the piece of conveyor belt), removed the very fine burr on the Tormek leather wheel, and the apex can now whittle one of my chest hairs from root-to-tip at about 3.0 centimeters from the point of holding. Also polish...

Re: Wade & Butcher Boone fixed blade

Originally the blade used to be full convex ground, but sometime during it's existence a previous owner had sharpened a bit of a rough secundairy bevel into it. So i reground the blade by hand to full convex again on 400 grit wet & dry using WD40 oil as a lubricant on a medium hard rubber backing (o...

The owner of this Wade & Butcher Boone knife also seems quite happy with the edge holding of his knife:

This Pathe footage from 1949 shows the actual making of the crucibles and how they were used to produce cast steel: https://www.britishpathe.com/video/hand-made-steel-handmade-steel/query/foundries The first reaction below almost the footage on YouTube (but without sound) reads this: "George Goodwin...

Re: Wade & Butcher Boone fixed blade

Currently i'm doing a bit of online research on what kind of steel was used in these knives, and according to this old ad the Boone blades were made from (the famous) Wardlow steel. https://i.postimg.cc/8FRbR8Kp/Wade-Butcher-Boone-1.jpg Then i found these posts from 2017 on a forum: Question: "What ...

Wade & Butcher Boone fixed blade

My most recent find is this Wade & Butcher "Boone" carbon steel hunting knife. It was discovered together with several other vintage hunting knives in an old leather hunting bag from the 1930's somewhere in Amsterdam. The steel has gotten a dark grey patina from being stored inside the sheath for de...

Re: Vintage Puma 8101 Texas Bill

The knife is now almost done. The blade surface was refined with 800 grit wet & dry and some WD40. The new convex edge apex measures +/- 30 degrees inclusive and needs to have it's tiny burr removed later, after which the sheath will receive a few coats of warm Granger's wax. https://i.postimg.cc/Pp...

Separately polished the miniature guard a bit, then put the handle back together using glue between all the washers: https://i.postimg.cc/d733pGdt/image.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/BXNq3XJ8/image.jpg Egalized the surface with a few different grits of sanding linen, treated it with several coats of warm...

Re: Vintage Puma 8101 Texas Bill

This is how the blade looks after regrinding by hand both sides with only 400 grit wet & dry SiC paper using WD40 oil as a lubricant on a semi-hard rubber backing. Somewhere in the past the edge had already been sharpened convex, so in order to remove as little steel as necessary i just evened thing...

Re: Vintage Puma 8101 Texas Bill

Handle disassembled.
Tools used: a modified Swiss Made PB flathead stubby no.5, a thin scalpel blade with a purposely overstropped apex (polished blunt), and the flathead screwdriver on my old Amefa army knife.

Vintage Puma 8101 Texas Bill

Today a member of Tactical Forum in Germany sent me this vintage Puma 8101 Texas Bill, advertized in a +/- 1950's Puma brochure as a "throwing Scout knife" (German: Wurf und Fahrtenmesser) The request is to give it some TLC, post some pics how i do things, and then return the knife to it's owner. ht...

Vintage Solingen Hacomer dagger

Solingen based manufacturer Hugo Hammesfahr & Co. GmbH. once used the following brand names: 'Blau-Jacke', 'Blau-Jungs', 'Crown & Torches' ('The', 1922), and 'Hacomer' (1922). This quality dagger with it's polished blade was probably made in the late '40's. https://i.postimg.cc/YLQMr6ZG/image.jpg ht...
