Hey, a question!
I think you are right on the money with your assessment. There are quite a few unstamped picklocks around, which leaves me to believe they "migrated" here from Mexico.

I don't personally own one of the Home Decorators models. I found them after I got a large antique map chest. I would think they would hold them all-especially in the larger sizes.

The levers are nickel plated steel. You polished through the copper undercoat, down to bare steel.

Here is another trick. After you do your file work, polish the cuts to mirror finish (or not). Then heat the spring until it turns blue. Immediately remove the heat. Let cool. Polish only the high areas to bright steel.
Really cool color that will stay there indefinitely.

I have not converted one, but there is not much room without thicker scales. A leaf spring would be a must.
