In the few short months I have been loitering on a couple of these knife nut sites, I have witnessed some great things.

The Red Cross I believe is for the most part a reputable charity. Some others like the United Way I wouldn't give a nickle to.

Like Sammy said, I also try to give to the local soup kithens when I can because who knows, it may be me who needs a hot meal someday.
