It can be done free hand. Here is one I started on yesterday I'm going to rehandle it so I haven't polished the bolsters yet and I just did another tonight for a local guy. A little over 2 ounces lighter than a stock buck. Oh, I reshaped the handle and reprofiled and flatground the blade too 8) . ht...

Some Of My work
This is what I do most often in addition to making custom fixed blade knives and occasionally a custom slipjoint, however embellishment accounts for most of my shop time.
