If it is going to be a knife that he carries, by all means get something sturdy. I often carry a stileto but for the most part all I'm doing with it is cutting open boxes or using it for therapy. Lever locks are good alround knives but might cost a bit more than you want to spend. Probably something...

Those are nice cases, too. I have had a rather difficult time finding display cases that don't cost an arm and two digets.
