You might want to get one of these

Guys, this might sound like an infomercial, but I really just like to let friends know about a good deal on something that's been very helpful to me. If you have cutting tasks on a daily basis like I do you may want to grab one of these Kobalt folding utility knives. BO/BC, but not an automatic. I p...

Re: Coil spring straightening

JerryK, the coil springs are free, and being a welder with over thirty years experience, while I'm not a metallurgist, I do have a bit of metallurgical knowledge. I can control a torch and "read" the color of the metal. I just needed to be told what to look for. I know cherry red from "about to liqu...

Re: tang stamp "6"

To your point, Killgar, I've been trying to identify this swing guard without success. I can't value it very accurately since I can't say who made it. I won it on the blade auction site some twenty - plus years ago. It was claimed by the seller to be from Jndiana, Maniago. But according to what has ...

Re: Rizzuto Repair

That one looks very similar to one I sold/ traded on here a few months ago. Mine had the swage blade, tang stamp, and the bolster wasn't stepped.

Re: Coil spring straightening

Got it, Bill. Thanks. Gonna give the cold forming a go first. Maybe do one spring cold and anneal the other and see which one fires better. One thing is certain; I have plenty of donor springs to experiment with!

I don't see any reason that this would be the wrong forum, but I'm not a moderator so my opinion doesn't mean anything. The ones I know aren't overbearing at all in my experience here. I doubt it'll be an issue.

Re: Coil spring straightening

Question: if I heat up a coil spring in order to straighten it, can I then heat treat it back to springiness after getting it in the desired shape? OK, I have to ask, what did you do? Boots, I used two pairs of lineman's pliers and just grabbed on in two places pretty close to each other and twiste...

Re: Coil spring straightening

I have lots of these springs available at my work as they come as part of a bendix assembly . We discard this spring and replace it with a lighter weight one for use in the gear assembly we need it for.

Re: Coil spring straightening

Bill, this is about 3/32" in diameter stock, about the size of a round stock kick spring, which is what I'm thinking of using it for on my Taiwanese rebuild. I've already gotten it pulled into a very shallow arc of about four inches in length. I figure I'll need another similar length to make kick s...

Re: Coil spring straightening

Bill, what I wanted to know was if it would take a proper temper again after being annealed and the how of re heat treating it if it could be done. I'm quite capable of following directions I just need to know what to look for, color -wise as I heat it.

Re: Coil spring straightening

I'm having success shaping it cold, actually, so I don't think I'll risk it.
