What is this on the pommel?
Hi Bill and whoever else wants to comment on this. I got a new knife with some stuff that looks almost like rust on the bottom of the pommel. The knife was manufactured beginning of the year and shows no signs of use, so I doubt it's rust.
What is that stuff and can it be (easily) removed by sanding and then polishing, or in some other way? Will there be permanent damage when it's removed?

Oh, it's rust alright!
Sand it all the way off, and then polish.

That stinks, doesn't it! New knife and all. Looks like an AG Campolin bottom?
The longer it is on there, the bigger chances it will pit the underlying metal, as well. A lot of it might polish off, but you will likely have to resort to some fine paper to get it all.

Thanks Bill!
What sort of sand paper would be best to use for this? I have Flitz polish.
Yes is does. Long story short, I didn't get a chance to open the knife and see the damage until after the return time was past, so I have to keep it now. You're correct it's an AGA 11" picklock by Renzo Pascotto. I bought this one to get rescaled but I'm certainly not putting more money into it if there's damage from the rust.ljerr2 wrote:That stinks, doesn't it! New knife and all. If you're sending it to Bill you might want to add the extra money to have him clean up that pin as well as long as he'll have it.
