Greetings, Legion Of Fan-
Here's another tale from WJC's Dad WWII adventures...
Elder Mr. Corpse told me of one of the few times he was actually a-scared in combat, to wit: he was having a cup of joe, standing below his crown turret base, whence the PBM was attacked by a Zero. He saw machine gun rounds penetrating the hull, stitching over the waist gunner position, on their way towards him, he was somewhat safe behind an armored turret base, except for his exposed ankles/feet. He instantly began alternating foot hiding posturing as the rounds clanged into the armored section, that scared him, AS he wanted to survive foot intact to resume dancing with his Sainted Bride.
The Zero flew by, and went into a roll to resume attack from behind. The PBM pilot, during evasive maneuvers, jettisoned fuel, from the aft nozzle, below tail gunner position. The fuel atomized into a vapor cloud, and the Zero flew into it, guns a blazing. Dad quoted the tail gunner, who said that the Zero disappeared in a surprise ending fireball, instantly immolating the canvas and wooden plane structure, and the remaining metal skeleton plummeted, no parachute seen to shoot at.
AS ever,
Your ol' pal,
Wally J. Corpse

Awesome war story. I very pleased to hear senior WJC went on to dance with bride. I’m am equally pleased and delighted that the attacking bomber incinerated himself.

Like to see that in a movie. Your Dad sure lucked out, getting shot in the feet would be better than shot inna head but you wouldn't want to get too far from a bathroom.

The Japanese for the most part, did not use parachutes as they considered the enemy who did use them as cowards. So basically, when they were shot down, they went down with the plane (good riddance). Our standpoint, and the same with most other fighter pilots including the Germans, was to live and fight another day. Thanks to the brave and relentless fighting spirit of our airmen and sailors, Kido Butai was almost non existent by wars end. Cherish those memories of your Dad and his dedication to service on our behalf. A few years ago, I visited the gravesite of my uncle (KIA at Okinawa) who is buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery. To stand there and gaze upon over 100,000 white markers was overwhelming, and humbling to know these heros fought for the preservation of our republic.
Best regards,
Bonz
