WEBROOT SECURE ANYWHERE ANTIVIRUS

Post by JerrBear »

Well, I went and did it again times - Bought another computer, this time a TOSHIBA laptop. Not hooked-upness yet. Came with WEBROOT antivirus software, free for 6 months, then I think $20 buck dollars a year...

Is anyone familiar with WEBROOT? Is it worth messing with or can I get as good or better virus protection at a reasonable price? I suspect they will want me to give them my credit card number up front upon installation and I don't really want to do that. I don't mind paying if it's worth it.

I have someone coming over tomorrow to set-up my computer, but I don't think she would qualify as a "GEEK," iff'n ya know what I mean...

Thanks for any help and/or advice. I'm totally ignorant about this whole thing...

Go with Avast! antivirus. It's free and doesn't slow down you computer. I've used it for years on all 3 of my computers.

Never heard of webroot so I did some looking. It is a fairly new cloud based security and gets mixed reviews.
http://download.cnet.com/Webroot-Secure ... 46458.html

I have used the free versions of the one jb mentioned (Avast!) as well as Avira and AVG. They all worked just fine for me. The only troubles I have ever had were using paid for antivirus software (Norton and McAfee).

For the last 6-7 months I have been using Microsoft Security essentials (also free) without problems. This was more out of necessity than choice because I am still limited to dial-up internet where I am located and just don't have any way to install/download the large files of most of the new antivirus software out now.

Your probably going to get a dozen suggestions, but in my experiance pay for AV wasn't better than the free stuff. I know, that goes against everything we have learned about getting what you pay for, but in my experience free has been better....

Whatever you use just make sure to update it daily. Most will do that automatically.

Here is a site that jarvis and sharperD turned me on to. It has free downloads of the most popular free software including quite a few antivirus/malware including the ones mentioned earlier.
http://www.filehippo.com/
You can also read reviews of different ones from the download.cnet site link I posted earlier.

Jerr- Have someone that knows what they are doing and I highly recommend having Webroot removed from your computer.
It is a very simple process- Go to "Add/Remove" programs and simply remove it before you get a new anti-virus program.

Webroot was made by the Devil himself  I have first hand experience with it and after several problems with it I did some searching and turns out it caused more trouble and allowed bugs and spyware produced by the same company that makes Webroot.

Norton used to be great but not any more. I am using the same one Whipper is using mainly because it is free but I would rather use something stronger.
I have an expired anti virus called ESET and is considered one of the absolute best out there.
The darn thing says it is expired yet still seems to function

The one JimBeam mentioned is good and also Kaspersky is what we got for my girlfriend's computer. We was told by the Computer Technician at the University of Missouri it was one of the best. (figured he knew a little something about it)

Here is a list of the Top 10
http://anti-virus-software-review.topte ... 9820246377

And good for you Jerr,I am happy you got yourself a computer.
You already know this but a good anti virus program is absolutely vital :!:

Ya Jerr can post pictures now!

I personally don't even have any antivirus. I mean i have a free one installed, but i have it turned off. This isn't the way for everyone to go however.

I find i don't need it because i don't open anything i dont know what it is. Like no spam emails, no random links to sites i dont know. I basically frequent the same exact sites every day, know what emails i get. And i have never had a problem.

Even if you click on an unknown link to a website, often times you have to again click to download something to get a virus. So me personally i have never had a problem.

I would also recommend going with a free version as in the past i have paid for some different ones and the free ones (for whatever reason) seem to have worked better and smoother

This would not work for the JBear, ifin' he were stumble across that midget porn he could be in trouble

I for one would not even turn my computer on without a anti virus program.
There are so many other problems out there such as home page hi-jackers,e-mail's that can look as if they come from a known source, spy ware and bugs.
All these can enter a computer without your knowledge.

My recommendation is to buy the Kaspersky program (the actual disc) or whatever you choose at a computer store. This way you will always have it on hand.
If/when it expires it costs much less to have it updated.

The Kaspersky protects from everything they can throw at you and then some.
Whatever you choose at least choose one from the Top !0 best in the link I sent.

Thanks, guys!

You have all been mos' helpful. I'm leaning toward the Avast! ...

Will be awhile afore I'm up-and-running. I was planning on "piggy-backing" on my neighbor's wireless router (across the street), but, alas, it's too far away... BUMMER!

Now, I'm gonna have to find an ISP. Any suggestions? I'm thinking AT&T but that's just because I have my phone service with them and I don't know any better.

Mr. Chrisa,

Don't have me posting any pictures just yet - Don't even have a camera and I'm probably too jimpin' stUPid to learn how to do it anyways...

Hey Jerr you can get a gizmo that will increase the range of your wireless. They are not very expensive. Radio Shack or any of those types of stores will have them. I use one on one of my computers and it works really great. They are USB and just plug and play. If you need more info pm me.

How the hell would I know, Mr. Whipper? :P HO! HO! :P

I'm up-and-running is all I can say. Kinda slow as I am pretty far away from the router. Bought an adapter with a little antenna, but I'm still only getting twice times bars. "Range Extender" scheduled for delivery this day, so I'm hoping that helps.

Installed NORTON myself just so I would have something. Tried to install AVAST! 2012, but NORTON said it could damage my computer, so I quit.

Ordered a book from Amazon - "Is this Thing On? A Computer Handbook for Late Bloomers, Technophobes, and the Kicking & Screaming." Probably will also buy "Computers for Dummies" tooness...

I'm going to keep my MSNTV2 as it is much better for sending and reading emails and that's mostly what I use it for. I will be using the computer mostly for watching midget porn and shopping online...

Mayhap downna road I will get a digital camera and you can teach me how to post pictures of my Italian style Milano stiletto and my Milano assisted opener...

Thanks for checking on me...

Mr. JerrBeer,

I have high speed wireless, and telephone with the cable company here. It costs 80 bucks a month and I can make as many calls around the states as I want for no extra charge. You may want to check out some deals in Fresnolandia.

Another thing ol' pal, anti-virus is only as good as the latest updates. The bestest and most expensive cannot stop a new bug. The majority come through e-mails. Never open an e-mail if you don't know who it's from, no matter how innocent they look.

Best regards,

Bonz

Jerr- Anytime a new program is installed the other anti virus program will send that "warning",it is nothing to worry about.
I would uninstall/remove the Norton completely if I were you. I can tell you how if you want. It is very easy to do,heck even a camel could do it
The Avast is an excellent anti-virus.
