I dont think the tradition itself is dumb. Its just different. I mean on the 4th we all light off fireworks, really its just something symbolic to them. And they get to blow stuff up with a hammer.

What i DO think is dumb, is the kids purposely loaded that thing with TOO many explosives. Which they did on purpose lol.

How do you make a giant hammer better? Put a bomb on it, so you get a better smashing effect, when you hammer someone or something with it.

Keep in mind, you are a whole three feet away, when it blows up, so you could blow up too, rendering the coolness factor useless.

Might not be one of the smartest things ...but one of the most unique things I've seen is anvil shooting. They pack a stump or other powder holder with black powder and place an anvil on top . light a long fuse and send the sucker into the air. Was amazed at he height they get with something that heavy.

"Firing the anvil" is often done at Blacksmith/Knifesmith gatherings
Using two anvils [bottom to bottom] is the most common method but not the only one
