A Sheffield Workhouse Table Knife
In England, for centuries, if you were poor, disabled, a debtor, a destitute widow or waif, you wound up in a 'Workhouse'. Possibly for the rest of your natural life. We all recall David Copperfield and his lament; "Please, I want some more (food)"..So this one is a knife I would never sell. Purchased in London, years ago, on Brick Lane for several shillings (then). Tapered tang, cross worked bone handles and a short sharp edge for cutting, with the chilling word 'Workhouse'. Dates to the 1840's or a tad earlier
