13" Straydog Ice Pick

Post by ILikeStilettos »

Six months back, or so, my very good friend donc bought a group of mundane 13" Italian stilettos, and knowing my predilection for dagger grinds, he sent me one of them. The knife was an AKC brand done in some kind of red colored wood, probably olive wood. At the time it was a pivot bolster. The funny thing is I liked the red color even more than the dagger blade, so when I bought a set of acrylic blocks from Bear Tooth Woods, one of them was something called "Lava Flows", and it went to Ron for use on this knife.

I told Ron I thought that the knife should be bottomless with silver colored liners and an earless NS top bolster. I also wanted something different for the button. Ron built an entirely new set of liners out of galvanized steel and reeded (coined) them all the way around. I think this makes for a very elegant knife.

He added lovely vine and thorn filework to the spine, including where it wraps around the pommel. I am so pleased with this one!

Here's my new oval NS button. The safety has been eliminated. Once Ron shined them, those acrylic scales really pop.

One of the reasons why I am so fond of acrylic is that the color goes all the way through and so does the pattern. You cut slabs and they match perfectly on both sides of the knife. The edges of the swirls look a bit blue in the photos, but they're really more black.

Here's a close-up of the logo and the new button.

I just love this knife. It is so slender and wicked and weights in at a skinny 7.25 oz.

Ron does some outstanding work and he really makes the scale pins look slick.
I prefer natural but these red numbers look great with that oval button. Very sleek with the dagger grind.

You wouldn't believe me if I told you! Remember, the donor was a gift.

You saw the other one I have, right?

I'm betting the price was more than reasonable. Besides being a super nice guy, our Mr. Dawgie under-values the worth of his extraordinary craftsmanship. I don't think the mutt realizes how jimpin' GOOD he is...
