I believe the horn with the ring pulls were used by sheppards or sheep herders.

Ring pulls pop up in assorted areas. The French have liked them even in cattle country. I won't even guess where they originated because someone with more knowledge or a better library [or search engine] will gladly prove you wrong. Even the standard lockback that Buck "invented"
