Rommel hunts big-game ;]

Post by Vagrant »

Last week, with the snow finally melted, Rommel went for a woods-walk, and came home with a moose antler. He has brought home deer antlers before but, this is the first time for a moose :!:

Ticks already? We don't see ticks till around mid summer. Don't know if you have chiggers that far north but we got'em down here and talk about miserable, they can drive you crazy with the itching.
As kids we always got ate-up with chiggers when we went to the blackberry patch.

It's good to hear Rommel is still up to his orneriness.

Ticks as soon as the ground is free of snow [no chiggers]
Someone asked me why Rommel was biting Gretchens ear ? He was pulling a tick off her:idea: He hates the darn things, even on her he has to remove them.

A little off subject but years ago I was driving down a country road and saw a pretty darn big snapping turtle crossing the road.
There wasn't any ponds or water for a few miles so I threw him in the back of the truck and drove him down to the river.
When I went to grab him I saw about 4 or 5 big black leeches on his back and one on the soft part of his back leg.
I used a pocket knife to cut'em off his shell and when I finally got them off there were little holes drilled right through.
It amazed me that a leech could bore through a turtle shell like that.

I have had many a skeeter bites, ticks and chiggers but never a leech...and after seeing that I hope I never get one

 That's hectic! I've been feasted upon many times by leaches, (both kinds, the sluggish ones & y'all know the others -got arms & legs) but these ones you got Viking sound like something different, or very hungry!

Jim the term is "maddening" You can't even get any sleep.
One misconception is that there is a bug under the skin when in fact it is just a bite like a mosquito.
People used to put nail polish on the bite with the thought of suffocating the chigger

Krab is there anything on your island that "isn't" deadly or poisonous?
In the US we have two spiders to worry about, black widow and the fiddle-back(brown recluse) You however have two spiders that are not poisonous and all the others are deadly
All your snakes, jellyfish, scorpions, spiders and even your ants can kill a feller.
Here ants may be nuisance, there ants kill  Hey I hate television but love my nature shows. I know about the Jack Jumper- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_jumper_ant

Not long ago we were talking about a critter we have here in the states called a velvet ant,it is a wingless wasp and these guys are no joke.
As a kid I saw this big red fuzzy ant and tried to pick him up...three days later my thumb was still on fire

Another little nasty we have is the bald-faced-hornet.
This is funny- The map below shows their "habitat" and Missouri is not considered.
I find this interesting, because in September of 1996 on a Friday 13th I got my arse stung off by a bunch of critters looking just like these guys and the nest was the size of a basketball.
