EDC.....What Common Scale Material Holds Up Best?
If a fella wanted to carry a stiletto with him every day, what would you guys recommend for scales. I'm sure there's pros and cons about swings in temp and humidity and abrasion from pocket change and keys, etc. Just curious as to what would be the most resilient.

Titanium, if possible

Micarta or stag, [Titanium makes great liners]

I think carbon fiber would do well although it sure wouldn't be "classic".

Let us not forget Micarta!

Re: EDC.....What Common Scale Material Holds Up Best?
my favorite is Wood , ebony - olive- Bokote- oak etc... any hard woods will do great for EDC , woods are tough enough to withstand just about anything even being dropped on concrete surface and they will not warp like blackhorn or worse blondhorn , stag is tough but will chip if dropped, micarta is a pretty tough material . i have a 11" stiletto Frank Beltrame sent me as a gift many yrs ago and it has G-10 handles which are awesome for EDC i mean your hands could be soaking wet and you still will have a great grip on it and it is super tough material. i personally love the old school Brazilian horn, Blackhorn, Blondhorn, Stag but for EDC ill take a wood handled knife.

Thanks for the replies fellas! Bill, when I see Acrylic, imitation MOP, Micarta, Pearlex etc., are these all just plastic? Which plastic is the best ? These are for sure less expensive than than natural materials and is a plus for me.Bill DeShivs wrote:Yep-plastic is pretty good.

Micarta is the most durable of the ones you mentioned.

I have a Frank B swing guard with black Micarta scales and it's in great shape. Looks like it will last forever. Will the Micarta eventually shrink like the plastic ones?

Micarta is your best choice. The plastics are susceptible to the fossil carbon based oils and so forth. You never know what you will use it for. I picked up a nice micarta scaled stilleto from Angelo Campolin at Blade - it is in my garage and does a nice job of opening all packages, boxes and letters that show up.
