Kick springs sticking out past handles

Post by captn hook » Sun Sep 05, 2010 8:02 am

I see stillettos with kick springs sticking out past the handles. Usually on 11" or bigger, and on alot of AKC 9" swing guards.
And I usually pass them up because of this, should it detract from the knife or am I just being to Finicky? :?
Your thoughts on this, will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx,

Mike

I have never considered this an issue, and in fact thought it has an appeal on some knives, but I have seen others post that it is a concern for some. I will tell you, I have have seen many knives that are very old, and well used that never have an issue with function or spring breakage due to this issue.

Thanx Tom, I've seen alot of members knives that do have this so I guess it really isn't a big concern.
I wasn't concerned about breakage or anything. I guess during assembly, some knives are tighter than others
and need a little more spring so to speak.
Thanx again,

Mike

I've noticed that on alot of knives, too. It sort of bothers me as well because it doesn't look like it "should" be that way. I know I am probably too finicky myself, I'm just surprised I've never posted about it or seen it mentioned before.

The protruding spring have been mentioned before, but are not considered as a defect just something out of the norm. They do not interfere in any way with the functionality of the knife.

I think the aesthetics of this type of knife are as important as functionality. IMHO the spring sticking out looks awful as do hollow bolsters. I know that they don't affect function but they look sloppy and I want my knives to look cool. If all I wanted was function I'd buy a cutter and a prybar.

I will add one thing which I guess added to my opinion that this is not an issue for me. As I read the others replies, I asked myself why I almost liked a spring protruding on certain knives, and then I remebered that I am a bit older and was around when all the false button models where being sold, and seeing the spring sticking out a bit let you know quickly they were real autos! Some of the fastest back then had the springs sticking out a bit also.

I suppose I´m the same age as you, Tom :D
I wouldn´t mind having a spring sticking out a bit, on this old manual "false button" stiletto :D

It is stamped LENIK over 453/70 over STOCKHOLM and is 8" OAL, and very nicely built...
Except for the "missing" kickspring

If you'll look at these; some have the spring exposed, some don't. I don't think it detracts at all.

I'm fairly neutral, slight preferance for non-protruding.
But. I do want to dispel the myth that, protruding automatically "fires harder" :!:
It MAY help sales, to the uninformed

Too true the slowest opener I have has a sticking out spring. Hard and fast opening seems desirable but it only adds wear to the knife What is really desirable is a knife that opens and locks everytime you push the button.
