A really nice pair

Post by jim d, »

A really nice pair of.........switchblades, of course. My two latest arrivals are:

- 11 inch AB/SKM Damascus bayonet horn stiletto. Mick, give the guys and gals my thanks. This is a fine example: beautiful horn with a pretty pattern ranging from dark brown to creamy white, great Damascus pattern, perfectly centered blade, no visible flaws anywhere on the knife, great snap, and tight lockup (or you know I would be complaining!). The AB tang stamp on the Damascus is exceptional, as is the the blue velvet box.

- 14cm horn Hubertus, one of the discontinued (or supposedly soon to be) models, brilliant mirror polished blade and bolsters, dark horn, and a kick second only to my godfather. Hubie fans should get one or more of these. I had a chance to see Greyblade's stag version, and it is exceptional as well.

Thought I would pipe up in Jim's absence. After Jim made the most prudent suggestion of investing in the soon to be obselete 14cm, I also decided to look for one. Coincidentally, I solicited the same BA dealer he did (Ironside), and got a great deal on a dark horn as well. Jim and I had somewhat different experiences with ironside. He seemed to have some serious computer glitches right around the time that we made the transaction, which created a bit of confusion. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt, and believe that they were just admin. glitches, because he was very quick to correct the problems once brought to his attention. Needless to say, this caused Jim to receive his knife about a week after me despite the fact he ordered a week earlier....way to hang in there Jim. I think we got great deals on excellent knives that were worth the wait. Ironside was a great guy to deal with despite the problems. I concur with Jim's review...it's a top notch, solid piece with a crazy kick! Here is a pic of mine next to a 12cm for size reference.

I hope to be able to review the dark horn fish enroute to me later this week.

mr_edge,

Thanks for answering. Your analysis of my experience was exact. I'm sure the 12cm Slimline is on its way out as well.

Mr. Jim D,

May I suggest a purchase of a digital camera? It would be nice to see the pair you scored, and the knives too.

Have you ever noticed that some knives you seem to like more after having them for some time, while the opposite is true for others? I seem to appreciate these more and more every day.

The Damascus/horn stiletto has a nice feel and balance, not to mention the visual appeal of Damascus and streaked horn.

The big Hubie is just plain fun to fire. As some of us have mentioned, they are purportedly on the way out, so now might be a good time to get one (or more).

Bonz - thanks again for the posting information. I'll be off to the Florida Keys for some fishing the middle of next week, and will give it a try when I return.

Jim...I'm still flicking th hubie compulsively. What is really neat, due to the springy lever button, you can fire the blade and safety the knife is one fluid motion just by releasing the lever.
