BEST BUCK AUTO CONVERSIONS

Post by METALGOD »

Hi all im wondering who has the very best Buck 110 auto conversions these days :? , i know years ago they were made pretty good as i gave one to my father on his birthday , well know i have a nephew who is a EMT/ Fireman and i think a buck auto would be great for him as all his emt/fireman buddies carry the bucks but not the auto ones, his birthday is coming soon next 2 months and i need to find one for him asap , i was leaning towards the 110 with the finger grips. any info will be very much appreciated :)
Thanks Bernie

I too would like to know which Buck auto is favored.
The only thing I know is that there are leaf spring and coil fired models and for your nephew I would recommend the dual action model that allows both manual and auto.
PVK has the dual action which I think most Buck conversions are.
I personally like the looks of the round button as opposed to the oval but both are nice.
If you get one you might consider having his initials engraved on the button or a bolster,it would look nice and not cost much at all.

Here are a few links, although I only see the 112 with the finger grooves.

hi i checked out the sites you listed but still up in the air about who has the best as they all claim they have the best bucks lol , when i was looking for my father years ago everyone said stay away from the round button style as the buttons had tendency to stick so i went with the longer bar style and my father has had it for 7 years now with no problems , now im hearing the round button style are the best and bar style are so so , i dont want to buyt a knock off from china as im told the Buck 110 is the most copied knife in the entire world made everywhere from china, Taiwan to asia to mexico lol , dammit ill find one sooner or later hopefully before my nephew b-day :)
Thanks Bernie

Good luck Bernie,I am a bit surprised more have not gave their input on this subject.
Maybe ask this question at the SD forum and see what they say.
I hope you find a good one.

Most of the dealers that sell them are pretty tight lipped about who the people are who convert them.

I know I was talking with Horizonod awhile back and he was kind of disappointed with whomever he had gotten his last batch from. Seems they had a problem with quite a few and sent them back to get fixed. Now the guy doing it has decided he isn't going to do the conversions anymore and last I knew Horizonod can't even get the faulty knves back.

Bernie, you might want to get ahold of KnightHD (he started the thread under this one). He might sell you one of his conversions.

Vince Londini converted the Buck 110 I bought. There's nothing wrong with it.

Were I buying abother "converted" Buck 110, I'd buy a "button" conversion with a coil spring. This is because the knife will open in any position. I would also make certain that I bought the Buck with the Nickle/Silver bolsters, as they resist tarnishing and corrosion.

The only problem with the coil spring Bucks are if that coil spring breaks it is alot harder to get fixed. All the leaf fired Bucks that I have owned appeared to be a slip in style (although I never attempted to remove one, so I'm not positive how easy it would be).

I don't own one and have never handled one, but it seems to me the Cumberland Mountain conversions are some of the most sought after.
Apparently they are getting hard to find, though.

Here is one that was for sale here last year for only $100: http://www.talkblade.info/viewtopic.php?p=198814
The thread doesn't say if it sold or not.

And a little more info on them: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... k-110-Auto

Cumberland made my favorite Buck 110 conversion. They were reliable, well made and had a round button, which I prefer. Terry is correct about the coil springs being harder to fix if they break but I never heard of a coil breaking. The leaf springs did break sometimes but were pretty easy fixes requiring no disassembly. The double action 110s never made much sense to me. If you are going to make a knife that opens manually why not find a less glaring release than a big honkin button. A dual action hidden release would be a hot number. We were working on one with a conversion co. but it never happened. The double actions had way more of their share of problems because they didn't heat treat the sears properly and they quickly wore out causing the knife to either not stay closed or have a hairy scarry trigger. Most of the newer conversions were done by Kieth wood or Patrick Wirtz. Neither of these guys will do one for a single customer and prefer 50+ pieces so giving out names isn't really a problem. Sadly the people that converted the Bucks ran into QC problems and no longer do them.

I would like to know who is doing the coil spring plunge buttons I'm seeing lately. Any ideas?

Item # 260789228 @Gunbroker.com
Does anyone have an informed opinion as to whether the above item is really a Cumberland Mtn. conversion, or just another fake?
The Buck itself seems real enough, but I'm in doubt about the rest. I've been trying to track down posts here and elsewhere long enough to get a headache, but can't find a pic of the real deal. I thought I remembered seeing one somewhere-maybe I just missed it this time. I already have one Buck round-button conversion that doesn't claim to be a CM (no logo on blade) and I'm OK with that-I didn't pay a CM price for it. I think I'd like the real thing if it doesn't cost a body part.
(I'm sorry if this has already been done to death, but I still don't know enough to look at the pic and buy.) Anybody have some extra education he'd be willing to pass along? Thanks a bunch.
