In some parts of Italy there was a tradition of coltelli d'amore (knives of love). You gave one to your girl so she could defend her honour and you had one to defend/avenge her. Usually quite ornate with engraved blades. They are still made by artisans and at least one of the large cutlery firms mak...

I'd agree with my next door neighbour Sam Hotton. Save and buy the real thing. Even the knock-offs vary a lot in quality and it would be best to see what you are buying. This site has some but I think they are overpriced crap and I have some reservations about Russian sites anyway. http://www.handwa...

Interesting point about an Indian connection. I am not sure about the origins of the weapons collection, but the bulk of the collection as a whole came from France. One of the spring loaded pieces has a twin in a collection in Florence, which according to the notes at the Wallace Collection was made...

Fakes? Certainly possible. But not too recent as the ones in the Wallace Collection have been there since Victorian times. When they were collected their value would have been so low that I doubt it was worth the effort of faking them, but most certainly the possibility exists. The other speculation...

I only had limited time available in London to do a little research at the Wallace Collection and only part of the weapons collection was open to the public. What I found that was of interest were some of the left hand quillons. This is a dagger used in the left hand in conjunction with the sword. S...

The Appleton overproof rum is not served or offered openly. They have to know you and you have to know to ask for it... because it's "illegal" ...or so I've heard. 8) I never tried the overproof Appleton in Jamaica. I did get to try overproof Jamaican rum in an unmarked bottle in London - Something...

O.K. do you know WHY you wanted the keys? No, but I tied a knot in my handkerchief to help me remember. Everything that can have a knot tied in it already does, but it hasn't helped. Some of the knots look quite well made though. I use the monkey fist knot with different coloured marbles according ...

There is a type of stiletto called "Siciliano". Which as the name implies comes from Sicily. Lenght ranges from 30 to 45cm, usually opened by inertia and unlocked with a ring or French lever. Very similar is the "Romano" and Neopolitan "sfarziglia". These are traditional knives and predate the Mania...
